Considering that Joseph literally threatened John's dwelling house/salvation over the Deputy'south amende, why would he practise this? My theory/headcanon is simply that John isn't quuiite as disillusioned with Dep as he may seem; he genuinely doesn't want to force them into it. He pushes them to leave the bunker in every manner, even telling them if they DON'T leave Hudson will be hurt. Information technology seems completely counterintuitive to his goal. He doesn't have to allow the Deputy "banquet on wrath" to atone. It's very dissimilar than the (literal) brainwashing techniques of his siblings.

- What if he's however playing a part for Joseph's sake, and a small office of him knows how wrong it is and doesn't desire the Deputy, a person he forms an odd attachment to, to be forced into it?
- Maybe more than likely, going with his cannon love/whatever for the Deputy, despite never experiencing it, he wants to be genuinely desired/wanted by the Dep and knows that has to exist their choice (essentially prioritizing that over Joseph's will). Non saying he doesn't definitely recollect he can "show" them they belong with him.
- He'south just testing the Deputy to see if they'd sacrifice for Hudson- that'due south why he gets so mad when they don't say Aye.
- He could only exist dramatic af, tbh.
